This project began with our client showing us a picture of a fireplace she had been dreaming of for over a year. She asked if it was possible for us to duplicate the feeling that image represented. The property the home is on, has a wooded valley adjacent to the space, but there was no view.
And finally, the space has a cathedral ceiling and the client asked if there was a way to put exposed beams on the ceiling. The space was large and lacked character – a blank canvas, but we added all the right touches and it has become an inviting, beautiful, rustic lodge.
The first day I was introduced to this space, was a cold mid-winter day. The large narrow room has several windows and a walk – out patio door all facing onto a beautiful wooded ravine and walking trail. The view that day was of the grey limbed trees and branches coated with a fresh layer of white fallen snow; the sun adding a little sparkle to the landscape. After talking with the clients about what the space represented to their family, it was easy to find the inspiration to make this room a warm wonderful, gathering place, inspired by the woods.
A beautiful, copper, leaf mirror was the catalyst for this renovation. The homeowner purchased the mirror quite a long time ago but had never found the right space to enjoy it. When the decision was made to turn an outdated 2 piece into a 3 piece bath, the finishing details were chosen with the mirror in mind. The tongue and groove ceiling, "exposed brick" feature wall and stained glass light fixtures complete the Vintage look.
This is one of those projects Interior Designers dream of. The Clients wanted to knock down the original house and start over. Blank canvas, almost! We used some of the original basement structure to form the front boundary for the main floor and there was an existing garage that needed to be joined to the new build. The rest of the new design was decided upon what the clients felt they need to be comfortable. After listening to what their dreams were and a few drafts, we came up with the right design to suit their lifestyle. The great thing about this project was the couple had plans of getting married, so not only were they starting brand new, so was their home having a new beginning.
I have had the pleasure of getting to know this returning client and her terrific family! One thing for sure; being able to spend time together, and with friends, is the forefront of every design decision.
With a createive leap of faith, we took a "Builder's Cottage" and gave it so much character and vibrant personality! A true reflection of this wonderful family.
